Our Team

John Mbotwa, PhD – Managing Director

R & C Stat Consulting was founded in 2021 by Dr. John Mbotwa. Dr. Mbotwa holds a Bachelor of Science in Statistics and Mathematics from the University of Malawi. Dr. Mbotwa also holds an MSc in Epidemiology and Biostatistics as well as a PhD in Biostatistics, both from the University of Leeds, England, United Kingdom.

Dr. Mbotwa started his career in 2011 as a Statistician at the ILiNS project under the College of Medicine. As a Statistician, he was involved in overseeing all activities pertaining to data collection, data entry, data storage, data cleaning, and data analysis. In 2012, he joined the University of Malawi’s Chancellor College as a part-time Instructor in Statistics. His main job was to deliver lectures and administer exams to undergraduate students. He later joined the Malawi Polytechnic as a part-time Lecturer in Statistics. He later joined the Malawi University of Science and Technology as a Lecturer in Statistics and Mathematics on full time basis.

Dr. Mbotwa started his PhD in 2017 at the University of Leeds, England. During his PhD, he worked as a tutor in Statistics and Mathematics in the School of Mathematics. His job as tutor was to administer tutorials, mark exercises, exams and to help students during practicals sessions. He has accumulated more than 10 years of experience in Biostatistics and Mathematics having worked with different institutions both in Malawi and the UK.

Dr. Mbotwa is currently a Lecturer in Statistics and Mathematics at the Malawi University of Science and Technology, Malawi. He is also a postdoctoral research associate at the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Trust where he oversees the analytical strategies for several studies. His areas of interest are: Epidemiology, Health data analytics, Survival modeling, Latent variable modeling, Causal inference methods, Machine learning and many more.

Noel Mbotwa – Research Assistant

Mr Noel Mbotwa is a dedicated and accomplished individual with a strong educational foundation and a passion for statistical analysis. Noel holds a Bachelor of Science degree with a major in Statistics and Mathematics from the prestigious University of Malawi. Thoughout his university journey, Noel has demonstrated exceptional academic prowess, earning a place on the Dean’s List in the first, second, and fourth years. This recognition underscores not only his deep understanding of statistical principles but also his unwavering commitment to excellence and a disciplined approach to learning.

His areas of expertise are: Statistical Analysis, Data Visualization, Designing studies, Sample size calculation, Project monitoring and evaluation, Data collection and visualization using KOBO Toolbox and SurveyCTO, Developing databases and querying data using Microsoft Access and SQL and many more. Noel’s recent project title: Assessing the performance of various survival analysis models in predicting the time to first child delivery among women of reproductive age in Malawi: The 2015-16 Malawi Demographic and Health Survey.
